Where is Knuckles

The Knuckles Mountain Range is located in central Sri Lanka, between the districts of Matale and Kandy. It is the highest mountain range in the country. According to legend, a sequence of recumbent folds and peaks in the western portion of the massif, which when viewed from specific spots in the Kandy District, like the fingers and thumb of a clenched fist, gave rise to the range’s name. Despite the fact that this name was given to the area by early British surveyors, the Sinhalese people have traditionally referred to it as Dumbara Kanduvetiya, which means Mist-laden Mountain Range.

The higher montane region is frequently shrouded in dense blankets of cloud cover. In addition to its aesthetic value, the range possesses significant scientific significance. The massif serves as a climatic microcosm of the rest of Sri Lanka, as the conditions of all of the country’s climatic zones are exhibited inside its boundaries. At higher elevations, there is a succession of isolated cloud forests that are home to a diverse range of flora and fauna species. While only 0.03 percent of the island’s total land area is covered by the range, it contains a substantially higher amount of the country’s biodiversity than the rest of the island combined. The isolated Knuckles range is home to a variety of relict and unique flora and animals that are distinct from those found in the central mountain range. More than 34% of Sri Lanka’s indigenous trees, shrubs, and herbs can only be found in these woods, according to the government. The Knuckles Conservation Forest, which is located in Sri Lanka’s Central Highlands, was inscribed on the UNESCO Natural World Heritage List in 2010.

Is Sri Lanka expensive?

Sri Lanka can still be reasonably affordable if you stick to local transportation and budget guesthouses. You can still travel by bus from one end of the island to the other for around $25, get a filling meal at local cafés for a few dollars, and find a decent double room for less than $100, all while staying in low-cost guesthouses.

How Many Peaks do Knuckles have?

Among the Knuckles Range’s peaks are nine peaks that rise above 1200 meters (4000 ft). With a height of 1906 meters, “Gombaniya” is the highest point in the region (6248 Ft). The highest of the knuckle-shaped five peaks is 1864 meters high, while the others are Aliyawetunaela 1647 meters high, Dumbanagala 1644 meters high, Yakungegala 1586 meters high, Dothalugala 1575 meters high, Koboneelagala 1555 meters high, Kalupahana (Thunthisgala) 1628 meters high, Rilagala 1605 meters high, and Telambugala 1331 meters high.

Threats

The large-scale cultivation of cardamom in montane forests poses a serious threat to the fragile forest ecosystem, which is already under stress.

Plant species such as Mist Flower (Ageratina riparia), which are becoming increasingly established in montane forest areas and montane grasslands, are destroying the unique Sri Lankan flora, which is threatened by invasive exotic species.
