This archeological site with ruins, known as “SEGALA,” is located beside a small tank in the Polonnaruawa District and is worth seeing. It is possible to witness stairways cut into the rock, caved-in structures, sthupas (stone pillars), caverns, and other archeological remnants on this property.
Segala is located in the lowlands of the flooded area of the Somawathi wild life park, and it has a population of about 2,000 people.
Muthugala Grama Niladhari Devision of the Welikanda Devisional Secretariat is responsible for maintaining this structure.
This location may be observed from the south direction of the Muthugala tank bund, after passing through the flooded area, where the Polonnaruwa – Madakalapuwa major road runs to Sevanapitiya and then turns left to Muthugala (see map below).
This location is located in the low line area, which is classified as being in the dry zone climatically. The mid-year rainfall in this area ranges between 1500 and 2000 mm, while the mid-year temperature ranges between 25 and 25 degrees Celsius.
Another unique feature of this place is that it is situated on the border of the prehistoric layer of the great and highlands, which makes it very attractive. When it comes to soil land, the presence of Rogosole and alluvial soil, which may be found in river valleys, can be observed. It is made up of fine sands that have been deposited by the overflowing “Waluka River.”
Because it is a flat land, there is no flow of water on this ground.
Throughout this land, there are isolated stones that can be found here and there.
The vegetation in this area is generally not very tall, as a result of the climate conditions in this location. Satin wood, Halmilla, Ebony, Palu, and Weera are examples of trees that are relatively tall. Other trees, in addition to being quite bushy, are also present. In addition, there is a lot of well-grown turf to be seen in this type of environmental setting. Elephants, wild bears, deer, buffalo, and peacocks are examples of living animals.
