About Crimson-Backed Flameback
In the woodpecker family Picidae, the crimson-backed Flameback or larger Sri Lanka Flameback (Chrysocolaptes stricklandi) is a species of bird that is native to Sri Lanka. It is also known as the Greater Sri Lanka Flameback. The Crimson-backed Flameback (Chrysocolaptes guttacristatus) and the Larger Flameback (Chrysocolaptes guttacristatus) were both previously believed to be subspecies of the Buff-Spotted Flameback (Chrysocolaptes cristatus) (Chrysocolaptes lucidus).
While it is nearly the same size as the more widely distributed Black-Rumped Flameback, this attractive woodpecker has a larger appearance and may be distinguished from that species by its crimson back and wings, a longer ivory color break, and a distinct call note, among other characteristics. This is a forest-loving bird that can be found practically everywhere on the island that has forests, but it likes the wet zone and mountains, where it may be found ascending to the greatest levels. The female has a black crown with white dots on it, similar to the male.
