The Travancore Flying Squirrel (Petinomys fuscocapillus), also called the tiny flying squirrel, is a rare species native to South India and Sri Lanka. Though extinct, it was rediscovered in Kerala in 1989 after a 100-year gap. In Sri Lanka, its first sighting in 78 years was recorded in the wet and intermediate zones, including the Sinharaja Forest Reserve.

Physical Description of Travancore Flying Squirrel

This squirrel is 32 cm long, with a 25–29 cm tail. Its reddish-brown fur is silky and shiny, while the underparts have a rosy-gray hue. Its feather-shaped tail has a reddish-brown top and blackish underside. Its dorsal fur is exceptionally soft and glossy.
