It is endemic to Sri Lanka’s wet zone and is designated as Vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List because the small population has deteriorated as a result of forest loss and fragmentation. It is found in the towering rainforests of southwest Sri Lanka, where it builds its nests in bushes. The average clutch size is 2โ3 eggs.
With a length of 43 cm, it is a medium to large bird. Its head and body are purple-black, and its wings are maroon above and black below. Its long tail is dark green, and it has a long tail. The bill is a striking pale green in color, as well. The appearance of the sexes is similar, but youngsters are duller and streaked. In comparison to the more widespread greater coucal, it is slightly smaller and less contrasted. Despite its large size and distinctive call, this species is difficult to observe due to the dense habitat in which it lives and the fact that it is a retiring individual.
