The Sri Lanka wood pigeon (Columba torringtoniae) is a species of pigeon that is found only in Sri Lanka’s mountains, where it is an endemic resident breeding bird.
Birds of the Central Highlands nest in damp evergreen woodlands, where they construct a stick nest in a tree and lay a single white egg in the spring and summer. Its flight is swift, with the regular beats of its wings and the occasional sharp flick of the wings that are characteristic of pigeons as a species in general. The majority of its food is made from vegetables. Normally deafeningly quiet, it makes an owl-like hooting sound during the breeding season.
The Sri Lanka wood pigeon has a length of 36 centimeters. The bird’s upper parts and tail are dark greys, while the head and underparts are lilacs, becoming paler on the belly as it gets closer to the ground. The nape of the neck is decorated with a chessboard pattern in black and white.
It is quite easy to see this pigeon in the woods of the Horton Plains National Park, Central Highlands where it lives.
